What is a RT account number?
What Payroll Taxes Does Florida Have?
- Income Tax: Florida has no income tax, so as an employer, you are not required to register for state payroll taxes. You are still required to withhold federal income taxes and federal payroll taxes such as Social Security and Medicare.
- New Employees: The state of Florida does require all employers to report all new or rehired employees to the Florida Department of Revenue within 20 days of the effective hire date. The hiring date is the first date any services are performed for which you will pay the employee wages or other compensation.
- Reemployment Tax: Florida employers are also required to register online for the reemployment tax with the Florida Department of Revenue. Registered businesses are issued a reemployment tax (RT) account number.
What is Reemployment Tax?
When a new employer pays reemployment tax, the initial rate is .0270 (2.7%) and continues at that rate for 10 quarters. The account will then be rated by dividing the total benefits charged to the account by the taxable payroll reported for the first seven of the last nine quarters immediately preceding the quarter for which the rate is effective.
