For many states, mining is a big industry. If you work in such a state and plan to start a business in mining, there are a few steps you’ll need to take first, including getting a mine license.

Who Needs a Mining License?

If you are one of the following, you need a mine license before you can begin mining:

• Owner
• Operator
• Lessee
• Licensee

The purpose of a mining business license is to ensure a safe working environment and to make sure anyone involved in mining knows how to uphold regulations set forth by their state’s business licenses, permits & tax board.

Training for the Mine License

Each state that has mines has a division that oversees the training and education of those involved in the industry. This department can tell you what the specific requirements are for obtaining your mine license, but chances are, it requires thorough education and training. Some topics you and your mining workers may be required to study include:

• Mine safety
• Courses related to surface or underground mining
• Duties of the foreman
• Proper work practices
• Medical response
• CPR
• Blasting

In addition to the training, you may be required to have a certain number of on-the-job training hours before you will qualify for your mine license.

Starting a Mining Business

In addition to getting your mine license, as the business owner, you will be required to provide an emergency action plan and other business licenses in order to start operating a mine. You’ll also need updated maps of the mine, and to provide proof of your worker’s compensation insurance.

If there are ever accidents on your site, your state’s mining business license division will inspect to determine the cause, and hopefully prevent future injuries and accidents.
